Conservation

We know HOW LUCKY we are to be able to enjoy the waters around the camp.  Trust we also appreciate that we’re but a small part of a much bigger picture.  The camp sits in the midst of a truly unique ecosystem… one that’s confronted by innumerable challenges.  Not only do we not want to add to these challenges, we want to do our part to mitigate them.  Yes, we realize the potential hypocrisy of simultaneously “developing” an area while espousing a goal of “preserving” it.  To that we’d argue that conscientious use of a resource creates advocates.  An area such as the Bacalar Chico National Reserve and Belize’s barrier reef need all the advocates possible.

Aside from being an amazing fishery, our front yard, as nature would have it, is one of the largest and most important nesting grounds for endangered loggerhead and green sea turtles in Belize.  Being new to the neighborhood, it behooves us to be good neighbors.

Turtles come up on our beaches at night May through November to nest.  We’ve purposely retained all of our beach vegetation as it’s this vegetation line the nesting turtles are seeking. The vegetation also blocks ambient light from the camp, which can distract and disorient hatchlings. Throughout the year we will work with the various organizations that identify and monitor the nests.  All guests will be instructed in best practices to prevent disturbing any nests.

We’re more than excited to be collaborating with the amazing folks at www.byfusion.com to showcase their innovative means of repurposing the waste plastic that is littering our oceans, beaches and roadsides.  Ambergris Caye is certainly no stranger to this problem.  Our goal?  By working with ByFusion, RPPC will serve as a catalyst for the dialogues and efforts required to bring their technology here to Belize.

Over the course of the year we will have weeks that combine fishing with organized beach clean up efforts.
These weeks will be offered at a discounted rate and are a great way for fly fishing clubs and college clubs to enjoy an affordable week on the flats while lending a hand to preserve the fishery habitat.
